The housing stock in the Dunbar area of Vancouver has undergone significant change in the past five years. Originally a working class neighbourhood with many quite modest homes surrounded by lovely gardens, it is now a neighbourhood that 99% of the people working in Vancouver cannot afford because the replacement homes are built to the maximum footprint and cost millions. Greenspace has been reduced. Included on this website are photos of many (not all) of the disappeared houses.

Oops--Wrong House

I demolished the wrong house! I recently was walking on this block and noticed that the white house on the right of the first photo (4047 West 20th) still stands, despite what I wrote in my blog entry of January 11, 2013. A new house now stands to its left. Since I was confused regarding which house was going to be demolished, I did not get a proper photo of the house that is now gone, but I dredged up these two partial photos of 4053 West 20th Avenue, which was demolished in 2011 or 2012. The first was taken in February 2011, with the melting snow; the second in May 2011 features the neighbour`s tulips.

PS on October 31, 2013: A Dunbar resident has forwarded a much better photo of the house! Now we can remember that it was one of those little houses with a round window.

Another one on Collingwood Street

This house situated next to a lane at 4961 Collingwood had a large footprint but will probably be replaced by a house with an even larger footprint. As is the case with many other houses just prior to demolition, it was rented. Torn down during the first half of June 2013.

Close to 41st Avenue

Sold in June 2012 and demolished in early June 2013.  This house sat on a 66 foot lot, so I wondered whether it would be split into two 33 foot lots, but only one house is under construction. This lot at 5638 Crown Street is a short block away from a 10-year-old custom built home currently for sale for $3,668,000.
